Empire of Sports, the sports-themed virtual world targeting adults, has moved into open beta, or what it calls "Prologue." The world was originally announced in the summer of 2007 and was set to launch by the end of that year, but has been in private beta for sometime. The virtual world is free to play and makes its money through sales of virtual goods, which it says users will be able to purchase on the cheap throughout the Prologue phase.
Empire of Sports is one of several sports-themed virtual worlds tackling the adult market. Unlike Football Superstars or Interzone Futebol, though, Empire lets you play one athlete across a variety of activities, like tennis, bobsledding, skiing, and, yes, soccer. The virtual goods are both aesthetic and performance-enhancing. With an atmosphere for both socializing (there was already a crowd, but all from France) and gameplay, it seems like a safe bet that plenty of users will buy in.
