Ukash and Telefonica announced a partnership yesterday to provide digital payment vouchers at 70,000 telephone kiosks throughout Spain. Users purchase the voucher through prompts on telephone screen itself, using cash for the voucher's equivalent, and then receive a code via SMS that can be used to convert the purchase into virtual currencies. Ukash, which received a $14.4 million investment in September, already supports various virtual worlds and games. Habbo Hotel in particular is piloting the telephone kiosk program in Spain, offering vouchers for 5 and 10 Euros a piece, and will participate in a joint marketing and outdoor advertising campaign to promote the kiosks to Spanish Habbo users.
"Kiosks are hugely widespread, present in the great majority of communities, including rural areas," Juan Utande Ramiro, marketing director for Telefónica Telecomunicaciones Públicas, said in a statement. "They allow services such as Ukash to conveniently reach audiences which would be almost impossible to reach otherwise."
