Vivox announced today that it would open its code and network as part of the Vivox Open Initiative to accelerate development and find new ways to approach communication in, out of, and within virtual worlds and MMOGs. Vivox will today provide the object code for voice in Second Life--which also announced its own new voice IM tool--plans to open APIs to third-party developers by the end of the year, and will open up source code for the client-side SDK shortly after that.
"Vivox voice is widely used part of many online games and virtual worlds today," David Laux, IBM Global executive, games and interactive entertainment, said in a statement. "Having been long time supporters of open standards, we are pleased to partner with Vivox to promote the growth and success of their voice services through its Open Initiative and the use of IBM server and software technology. This initiative supports IBM's continuous work with companies in the games and interactive entertainment industry providing innovative technologies that unlock creative assets and drive business value faster."
