Quick Stats: Weblin Hits 1 Million Users, 10k Downloads/Day
Weblin, a Virtual Worlds Innovation Awards winner from last week, announced today that it had hit the 1 million-user mark and is averaging 10,000 downloads/day. (I'm assuming that's registered users, but the press release says the company "has reached 1 million unique users worldwide.") The users are averaging 30 hours/month logged in to Weblin, which lets users surf the Web with avatars layered on top that can interact with each other and certain objects across different sites. That emphasis on interaction on top of the Web content may explain why the most popular sites according to Weblin are social networking sites like Facebook, Friendster, hi5, Orkut, Yahoo!, and YouTube.
"As a leader in the layered virtual worlds space, Weblin has made it possible to surf the Web with avatars freely without the restrictions of being limited to a virtual world or chat room," Marc Theermann, GM North America of weblin, said in a statement. "We look forward to continued growth over the next year."

Illegal! It may appear cool, but I'm sure most users don't realize this is actually a spyware. It takes and stores and tracks every single web page you visit (and even more), and it shares this information on their servers. Not sure if its even legal!

Doug, sorry but you are wrong. Every URL gets one way hash-encoded by the weblin client before it is sent to our server. We only get a sort of summary from the client but cannot track back where the user originally comes from. So no URL is actually leaving our customers PC. I know that most of our competitors are doing it the way you guessed but in our case you are wrong.
For some services e.g. Topcloud or weblin Flirt the URL is needed but in this case it is up to the user whether he wants to use this service or not.
For further information and how we solve it the technical way please have a look at http://virtual-presence.org/notes/VPTN-2.txt
