Hip Chicas Launches Beta for Latina Virtual World
Hip Chicas announced yesterday the launch of a limited (100,000 members) beta program for its new virtual world. The big hook for the tween-oriented world is a theme revolving around Hip Chicas, a five-girl band touring through the Americas to Help Improve the Planet. It's a lightweight, 2.5D world, but it will feature real locations from Mexico, Puerto Rico, New York, the Amazon, and more. There will be a free-to-play element as well as a Hip V.I.P. premium subscription for $45/year. One of the cooler features, to me at least, is an automated translator. All users' chat will appear in English, but they can also type in Spanish, Portuguese or French and have the translation appear alongside their native language.
“I wanted to create characters that were hip, so we made them a popular band of five smart girls with unique passions, strengths and skills with great music to boot. It would be difficult to compete with the bling-bling noise in the digital media market if our characters were boring,” Hip Chicas brand creator Lazaro Fuentes said in a statement. “It’s as if somewhere along the line, someone decided that being hip meant that girls had to dress or act inappropriately, or had to fit into a specific mold and that their only interests are picking hair colors or shopping for clothes. We’re clear that picking cool clothes and hair color is important to users, but they are looking for more; a higher level of engagement. We saw this with our 3 daughters, who are 5, 8 and 14 years old. They want to save the world, be in a band and start a blog all in one day.”
