8D World Received $1M+ for New Virtual World from Spark Capital
Earlier this month it came out that Boston-based 8D World received at least $1 million from Spark Capital and an unnamed Chinese
investor. That's based on regulatory filings, though Alex Finkelstein, a principal at Spark Capital and a member of 8D World's board, told the Boston Business Journal that Spark Capital has invested "meaningfully" more than $1 million in 8D World. The company, which plans to raise a full $7 million, is still in stealth mode, so there's not much info on what the project will eventually be, though it's aim is to launch a wide-reaching virtual world.
Spark Capital's portfolio description says that "8D World is building a virtual world that connects people around the globe," and 8D World describes its effort as a "revolutionary new project to build a virtual world that will benefit a massive world-wide audience. And, when it’s done, it’ll make the world a better place."
The plan is to go worldwide eventually, but begin with a launch in China and is currently hiring in Shanghai.
8D World is led by President and CEO Alex Wang, a founding team member and VP of Business Development at enterprise software company Emptoris, and EVP and Chief Product Officer Rick Goodman, who helped lead development on Age of Empires.
