Webkinz to Make Third-Party Ads Optional
In December, Ganz drew fire from parent groups and the New York Times for including advertising in its children's world Webkinz. However, as we and others noted in a follow-up, not all the response was negative. Some parents found the ads unobtrusive and understood the business motivations. In a Financial Times article on advertising in kids worlds last week, though, it seems like Ganz is trying to make everyone happy. The company said it "recognizes that some parents are against advertising, particularly those with very young children" and "will very soon be adding the ability for parents to turn off ads from our promotional partners." Webkinz also, apparently, is barring branded virtual goods campaigns after inspiring ire for "Bee Movie" and "Chipmunks"-themed outfits were initially made available. Advertisements for Ganz products, though, will remain on the site. [Financial Times via Izzy Neiss]
