Kids educational site Funbrain, a part of education giant Pearson, launched a virtual world, Poptropica, last September. It's now claiming over 14 million users, though it's not clear if that's active users or just registrations since launch. Today the world is launching a new island in its network, Time Tangled Island, a time travel-themed experience with a focus on history education. Time Tangled Island joins the existing Early Poptropica and Shark Tooth Island, with 7 other islands planned for launch before the end of the year. Throughout them all, users can customize avatars, chat with preset messages, and "battle" with casual games.
"Today, young children want a place online where they can play games, learn and socialize just like their parents and older siblings," said Jess M. Brallier, publisher, Family Education Network, developer of Poptropica. "We created Poptropica so young children would have a free, safe online environment where they could explore, build computer skills and have a good time."
