Disney Launches DGamer, A Meta-World for Nintendo DS
We first noted DGamer over the summer as a virtual world working across the Web as well as all of Disney's upcoming Nintendo DS titles. The service launches today with Disney/Walden Media's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian." A free service, DGamer lets users register through Disney.com and then interact on either their PC or DS, customizing 3D avatars, maintaining personal profiles, chat, and earn unlockable awards and virtual goods by playing through the games.
"DGamer was built around the vision to connect Disney video game fans in a secure, fun environment and it is truly the first integrated online community of its kind to do so on multiple platforms," said Graham Hopper, executive vice president and general manager for Disney Interactive Studios. "We recognize the importance of delivering unique experiences to our consumers and how crucial it is for parents to feel confident that the community is secure for their kids."
Parents can choose the level of chat freedom their children have, ranging from working with pre-selected phrases, a moderated chat, or completely open conversation, though the latter requires that users exchange DS friend codes first.
With all the talk that Home has been getting as a major console-based virtual world, I think this'll make for a good comparison. Home's aimed at a slightly older crowd, which, traditionally, hasn't seized on virtual worlds to the same degree as kids. It's obviously a richer environment with more features, but it'll be interesting to see how kids adapt to DGamer as older teens and adults adopt Home. And, of course, it'll be especially interesting to see what the DGamer kids are doing 5 years down the line.
