Even before Disney has launched Pixie Hollow, its virtual world for the Disney Fairies brand, it's gone all out with the toy-based tie-ins. That makes sense considering that as of last August, when Disney acquired Club Penguin, users had already created 2.5 million fairies. There's obviously a hunger for more interaction here. Today Disney announced that it would be bringing the virtual world to the handheld Nintendo DS, with Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell, available this coming holiday season.
The game will let users play as Tinker Bell and interact with other NPC fairies through quests and games, but the handheld game is also a deeper extension of the Web-based virtual world. Users can collect accessories and outfits to customize Tinker Bell, ccreate their own designs and patterns to dress in, and trade and gift items with other users as well.
The handheld game will integrate with Disney's recently launched DGamer, a sort of meta-world tying all of its Nintendo DS titles together through avatars, communication, and Web-based interaction. It seems like DGamer will let users take their trading past the DS and onto the Web as well as communicating in a themed chat room.
"Disney Fairies has become a phenomenon all around the world," Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios, said in a statement. "Bringing the game to DS allows fans to play as Tinker Bell and take the Fairies world everywhere they go, while having fun learning about the importance of creativity, teamwork and responsibility."
The additional options for sharing content, branching out to include the Web and the DS, and the cooperative nature of many of the goals make Pixie Hollow stand out in the host of new kids virtual worlds. Everything seems very simple, while still adding depth to the overall experience. So while I personally probably won't be playing much with Disney Fairies, it definitely piques my interest.
