Conduit Labs Releases Facebook App
Conduit Labs has joined the Facebook app rat race. Conduit, which announced in August that it had received $5.5 million to fund a browser-based solution to merge MMO casual gaming and social networking, took its first step by publicly releasing Make Me last Monday. The app lets users create animated versions of their friends "as unflattering or goofy as you please, then do things to them," according to the download page. "Like poke them in the butt. Or hug them, people do that too. It's fantastic. The hugging, we mean. Or, so we've heard."
It doesn't sound like the app is particularly indicative of the direction Conduit is going in. The company describes the origin as "We are a startup building something big and cool, but sometimes you get a little distracted and build stuff like this."
Plenty of virtual world companies are looking for ways to take advantage of Facebook's viral nature, though it seems like one of the greatest social networking crossovers is on Bebo, where Gaia Online draws a significant portion of its users. Scenecaster, likely the most successful virtual world app on Facebook so far is fairly lightweight and not-particularly focused on interaction, and it seems like Make Me might fit that mold. It's an avatar update to the incredibly popular SuperPoke! app.
Regardless, it's a particularly viral app. You can only create avatars for others. They have to return the favor for you to get your own.
