Bunchball Launches Cross-Network Games and Avatars with Bebo and Facebook

Bebo announced this morning that it was launching a development platform similar to Facebook's that would allow third-party developers to build their own applications for the social network. In a twist, the network is working closely with Facebook on Bebo's Open Application Platform, which will also be compatible with Google's recently announced OpenSocial. 40 developers launched with Bebo today, and one  of them, Bunchball, has launched a service to allow users of the Bunchball Games & Avatars app to work across all of the networks Bunchball services. “With the launch of our Open Applications Platform, we’re giving Beboers around the world a new way to communicate, relate and express themselves online. Bunchball’s revolutionary application will afford our users a new, creative and engaging multi-player, cross-network gaming experience, and we’re excited to have them on board for our launch,"  Michael Birch, CEO and Co-Founder, Bebo, said in a statement.

Bunchball had already implemented its app on Facebook (currently with just over 9000 daily active users), but the cross services allowed the company to easily transport its work.

"This makes it very, very easy to take the applications they have developed for the Facebook platform and import them to the Bebo platform," Ziv Navoth, Bebo's vice president of marketing, told Reuters in an interview.

The Games & Avatars app gives out  “Karma Points” to Bebo users for "watching videos, taking surveys, competing in single and multiplayer online games, playing the lottery, inviting their friends, and taking part in other site activities." But users can then connect to a virtual economy across multiple social networks to customize their avatar and virtual room and buy their way into additional tournaments and games.

If the cross-platform avatars, virtual goods, and 3D spaces take off for Bunchball, Bebo, Facebook, and Google, it might that convince more people of the need for interoperability in virtual worlds. That or the social networks might just create it themselves.
